Wataru Ohashi

OHASHI is a pioneer in holistic healthcare, introducing his Ohashiatsu® method of nurturing touch in the 1970s when he founded the international Ohashi Institute, a cultural and educational nonprofit organization. Based on the classic Eastern principles of meridian energy manipulation, Ohashi’s modality takes shiatsu (acupressure) to a higher level of well-being. Guided by his studies in Oriental Medicine, Japanese martial arts, and human movement, Ohashi has cultivated the best of these disciplines into his unique method. For over 45 years, Ohashi has practiced and taught OHASHI Method®/Ohashiatsu® in 27 countries to thousands of students, therapists, and professionals.

In Japanese the name “Ohashi” means “big bridge:” the perfect symbol for someone who has devoted his life to bringing Eastern modes of healing to the West. As the originator of Ohashiatsu®, a special method of touch derived from traditional Oriental Medicine, exercise, and Zen philosophy, Ohashi continues to bridge the cultural gap between East and West, and past and present by demonstrating the relevance of traditional healing therapies to contemporary society. His unique “Psychology of the Meridians” is an integral element in his teachings.

Ohashi’s experience with traditional oriental healing began in his infancy. Born in 1944, near Hiroshima, Japan, his weak constitution made him vulnerable to illness. As a young child, his strength was restored and has been maintained since by the healing techniques central to his teachings. Believing that the Eastern concept of health can benefit 21st century men and women, he has dedicated himself to the teaching and practice of this philosophy.

Ohashi has lectured and taught at the Omega Institute, the Esalen Institute, Rockefeller University, Logan College of Chiropractic, Harvard Medical School, and numerous internationally famous schools, retreat centers, and conferences. A master teacher who brings humor and joy to his classes, Ohashi enriches the lives of everyone he meets with his positive view of the human condition.

Over the years, his successful practice has attracted such notable clients as Ani DiFranco, Liza Minelli, Martha Graham, George Balanchine, Stan Getz, Ralph Lauren, Muhammad Ali and Henry Kissinger.

Ohashi’s books have been translated into several languages. He is creator of an educational video library on his OHASHI Method® modality. In 2007, Ohashi was honored with a Cultural Bridge Award recognizing his role in popularizing the Japanese therapy of shiatsu in the US and Europe.
