Today we are increasingly witnessing ways in which the healing practices of ancient wisdom traditions and the findings of contemporary science may be conjugated for the physical, emotional and spiritual health of humanity.  However, these developments require us to rethink what we mean by “healing” at all the different levels on which we function individually and communally.  Dr. Barratt offers some reflections as to how we might discriminate between the authenticity of healing and the madness that is sometimes called “progress.”

Dr. Barnaby Barratt

is internationally eminent as a radical psychoanalyst, specialist in human sexuality, somatic psychologist, human rights activist, and practitioner of tantric meditation.  Having lived in England, India, the USA and Thailand, he currently practices in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he works as a healer and is a Senior Research Associate with the WITS Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of Witwatersrand.

Dr. Barratt trained in African and Asian Studies at the University of Sussex in England, and subsequently earned doctoral degrees from Harvard University and the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality.  He has taught in Universities all over the USA as well as in South Africa, but for much of his early to mid-career he was Professor of Family Medicine, Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at the Wayne State University in Detroit.  He served for a decade as a Training Analyst with the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and is now a Training Analyst with the newly formed South African Psychoanalytic Association, affiliated with the International Psychoanalytic Association.

Interested in divergent approaches to healing, Dr. Barratt has also trained as a yoga teacher, a practitioner of Sen-Sib massage, a bodyworker, and a sexuality consultant. A lifelong activist for civil liberties and sexual freedom, Dr. Barratt is past President of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists, and a former Chair of the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance.  He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Positive Vibes, an NGO that serves HIV+ and LGBTQI communities throughout southern Africa.

Dr. Barratt has published a dozen books and over eighty scientific and professional articles and reviews.  His four most recent books are Liberating Eros (Xlibris, 2009), The Emergence of Somatic Psychology and Bodymind Therapy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010), What is Psychoanalysis? (Routledge, 2013), and and Radical Psychoanalysis: An Essay on Free-Associative Praxis (Routledge, 2016).
